Celeste, Arlo Parks and Mogwai are among the artists shortlisted for the Mercury Prize for album of the year.

Wolf Alice, who won in 2018, are also in the running – this time for their euphoric third album, Blue Weekend.

But they say they’re wary of another victory. “I would start to hate a band if they won it twice, without any rationale,” joked bassist Theo Ellis.

Other nomineees include Ghetts and Laura Mvula, while Berwyn is the first artist to be nominated for a mixtape.

Less formal than a traditional album, mixtapes usually serve as an introduction to a new artist, or appear as a stop-gap between major releases by acts like Drake or Kanye West.

Berwyn Dubois, who came third in the BBC Sound Of 2021, is recognised by the Mercury panel for his heartfelt and hook-filled debut Demotape/Vega, which he recorded in his bedroom three years ago and released last September.
